Thin Film Solar Panels

The world is becoming more environmentally conscious. The green movement has taught many people the importance of alternative sources of energy like water, wind and solar power. Technology is advancing to create more efficient ways to use this natural power. An example of such an innovation are thin film solar panels. If you know the basics of solar panels, then you are probably familiar with the PV or photovoltaic solar panel. Before we discuss the differences, let's take a brief look at how solar panels operate.

Solar panels are made from lots of solar cells. These cells take the energy of sunlight and turn it into electricity. In order to create electricity, there has to be sunlight. When sunlight disappears or is blocked the energy producing process is stopped and does not start again until the sunlight reappears. Because solar cells cannot store energy, a solar panel system requires energy storage to use at night while the solar cells are inactive. Many people use a battery storage system for their solar energy.

When it comes to the differences between traditional PV solar panels and thin film panels, the thickness of the panel really isn't applicable. These panels get their name from the process used to create them. Manufacturers use numerous layers of thin sunlight reactive material on a base which is where the name thin film panel comes from. Thin film panels require less material than traditional panels do. The manufacturing process is more efficient. Also, these panels can be installed right into architectural features like roofing tiles. Compared to the traditional PV panel the thin film panel is lighter.

You will find that thin film solar panels are more flexible to use than photovoltaic panels. Because they can be installed right on the roof tiles you won't need unsightly roof rack mounting. Thin film panels are easy and fast to install and can be applied to a roof panel within ten minutes. They are lightweight and require less materials to create which is good for the environment. In addition because they are faster and easier to install, you will spend less on professional installation. Regardless of what kind of solar panels you use, there are a variety of rebates and incentives for solar power users that you may want to investigate.
